One of the techniques for getting behind the conscious veil people like to keep in front of themselves, particularly where you suspect that they are putting on a show for your benefit, is to switch the focus of the conversation from them to “other people.”

사람들이 자신들 앞에 드리우고 싶어하는 의식적인 베일 뒤로 가보는 기법 중 하나는, 특히 여러분을 위해 그들이 가장하고 있다고 의심되는 경우에, 대화의 초점을 그들로부터 ‘다른 사람들’로 전환하는 것이다. 

 

On the basis that what people see in others reflects their own perspective, asking consumers what they think other people’s motives are can be enlightening.

사람들이 다른 사람들에게서 보는 것이 그들 자신의 관점을 반영한다는 것을 근거로 하여, 소비자들에게 다른 사람들의 동기가 무엇이라고 생각하는지를 물어보는 것은 많은 것을 드러내 줄 수 있다. 

 

Customers who are unwilling to reveal their own confusion with a product display will often be happy to point out that “other people” would find it confusing.

제품 전시에 관한 그들 자신의 당혹감을 드러내고 싶어 하지 않는 고객들은 종종 ‘다른 사람들’은 그것을 당혹스럽게 느낄거라는 것을 기꺼이 지적할 것이다. 

 

One word of warning though: it’s important to distinguish those responses that are the result of you having asked the respondent to represent the views of others from when they voluntarily do so.

그러나 한 마디 경고의 말이 있다. 여러분이 응답자에게 다른 사람들의 견해를 말해 달라고 요청한 결과인 그러한 응답과 그들이 자발적으로 그렇게 하는 경우를 구별하는 것이 중요하다. 

 

The latter can be a form of social politeness, for example when they think something is hopeless but they try to soften the blow by suggesting that someone else (who isn’t present) would think it was terrific.

후자는 일종의 사회적 예의일 수 있는데, 예를 들면 그들이 어떤 것이 가망이 없다고 생각하지만 (거기에 없는) 다른 어떤 사람은 그것이 굉장히 멋지다고 생각할 거라고 말함으로써 충격을 완화하려 하는 때가 거기에 해당한다.
