Despite the accumulated frustration and rage, brought about by our struggle to adapt ourselves to machines, genuine resistance to the machine is relatively rare.

우리 자신을 기계에 맞추려는 노력으로부터 초래된 누적된 좌절과 분노에도 불구하고, 기계에 대한 진정한 저항은 비교적 드물다. 

 

Our preconditioning to favor novelty keeps us fascinated by the machines.

새로운 것을 선호하도록 우리가 사전 조건화된 것은 우리가 기계에 계속 매료 되어 있게 한다. 

 

Generally people try bravely, even enthusiastically, to accommodate themselves.

일반적으로 사람들은 자신을 적응 시키려고 용감하게, 심지어 열정적으로 노력한다. 

 

They are not sure why they are consequently unhappy.

그들은 왜 자신들이 그 결과로 불행한지 잘 모른다. 

 

They do not blame the machines, for we have convinced ourselves—or been convinced by advertising and promotion — of their marvelous natures and of our great need for them.

그들은 기계를 탓하지 않는데, 왜냐하면 우리가 기계의 놀라운 본질과 그것에 대한 우리의 큰 필요에 대해 스스로를 납득시켜 버렸거나 아니면 광고와 홍보를 통해 설득되었기 때문이다. 

 

We have created dependency where none existed, forgetting that we survived and thrived as a species for hundreds of thousands of years without the internal combustion engine or the cell phone.

내연 기관 이나 휴대폰 없이 우리가 수십만 년 동안 하나의 종(種)으로서 생존하고 번성했다는 사실을 잊은 채, (의존증이) 존재하지도 않았던 곳에 의존증을 만들어 냈다. 

 

Now too many of us feel lost and inadequate and frightened if the lights go out.

이제는 우리 중 너무 많은 사람이 불이 꺼지면 어찌할 바를 모르고 무력하고 두렵다고 느낀다. 

 

We love our machines, after all—as we would a spouse in an enduring bad marriage, whose flaws are so familiar, whose irritating voice is so much a part of the background that it is impossible to conceive its not being there.

우리는 결국 우리의 기계를 사랑하는데, 그것은 우리가 지속되는 형편없는 결혼 생활에서 배우자를 사랑하는 것과 마찬가지라서, 그 배우자의 결함이 너무나 익숙하고, 그 배우자의 짜증나는 목소리가 너무나 배경의 일부가 되어 그것이 거기에 없는 것을 상상할 수도 없는 것과 같다.
