Each of us can see a different image of a chair, and, depending on this image, we can create an opinion of the chair which may be different from the opinion of this chair held by the person who is sitting on it.

 

우리 각자는 어떤 의자에 대한 다른 이미지를 볼 수 있고, 이 이미지에 따라,우리는 그 의자에 대한 의견을 낼 수 있는데 그 의견은 의자에 앉아 있는 사람이 가진 이 의자에 대한 의견과 다를 수도 있다. 

 

However, the fact that none of us has a complete vision of the chair is not a reason to think that there is no chair.

하지만 우리 가운데 그 의자의 완전한 모습을 보는 사람이 아무도 없다는 사실이 의자가 없다고 생각할 근거가 되지는 않는다. 

 

There is an ontological truth of the chair that is the chair itself, regardless of how we see it or even whether it is seen or not by somebody.

우리가 의자를 어떻게 보든, 혹은 심지어 누군가에게 그것이 보이든 보이지 않든 상관없이, 의자 그 자체인 의자의 존재론적 사실이 있다. 

 

 

If there were no truth, there would be no reality.

‘사실이 없다면 실재도 없을 것이다.’ 

 

The most curious thing is that Einstein never said that “Everything is relative”.

가장 호기심을 끄는 것은 아인슈타인은 ‘모든 것은 상대적이다’라고 결코 말하지 않았다는 것이다. 

 

On the contrary, what he said was that the speed of light is an absolute constant.

그와 반대로 그가 말한 것은 빛의 속도는 절대 상수라는 것이었다. 

 

Relativity is a property of perception, of appearance, but it does not affect the essence of what is observed although, as Schrödinger said, on observing it, we modify it, which does not deny its existence, but rather confirms its existence. 

 

상대성은 인식의 속성, 즉 외양의 속성이지만, 그것[상대성]은 관찰되는 것의 본질에 영향을 주지 않는데, Schrödinger가 말했듯이 비록 우리가 관찰할 때 그것[관찰되는 것]의 모양을 바꾼다 하더라도, 이런 사실은 그것의 존재를 부정하는 것이 아니라 오히려 그것의 존재를 확인하는 것이다. 

 

We also alter tools when we use them and they are not less real due to this.

우리는 또한 도구들을 사용할 때 그것들의 모양을 바꾸는데, 이것 때문에 그 도구들이 덜 실재하는 것이 아니다. 

 

If they were not modified, we would not have to sharpen scissors or pencils.

만약 그것들의 모양이 바뀌지 않는다면, 우리는 가위나 연필을 날카롭게 할 필요가 없을 것이다.
