The history of any animal species reveals a distinct sameness in behavior.

어떤 동물의 종이라도 역사를 살펴보면 행동에 있어 뚜렷한 유사성이 나타난다. 

 

A bird building its nest today will do it in almost exactly the same way that birds did it yesterday, a year ago, even thousands of years ago.

오늘 둥지를 짓는 새는 어제, 1년 전, 심지어 수 천 년 전에 그렇게 했던 것과 거의 똑같은 방식으로 둥지를 지을 것이다. 

 

 

And one can be quite sure that birds will continue in this same way thousands of years from now.

그리고 우리는 지금으로부터 수천 년 후에도 새들은 똑같은 방식을 유지할 것이라고 확신할 수 있다.

 

 

All animals, even the higher apes, closest to man in intelligence, show this sameness over vast stretches of time.

모든 동물들, 심지어 지능에 있어 인간과 가장 유사한, 높은 지능의 유인원들조차도 엄청나게 오랜 기간 동안 이러한 유사성을 보여 주고 있다. 

 

 

Man is different.

인간은 다르다. 

 

 

Change is a general characteristic of human thought, human action, and human development.

변화는 인간의 사고, 인간의 행동, 그리고 인간의 발전에 나타나는 일반적인 특성이다. 

 

 

A house built today is quite different from one that was built thousands of years ago or even a few decades ago.

오늘 지어진 집은 수천 년 전에 지어진 또는 심지어 불과 수십 년 전에 지어진 집과 매우 다르다. 

 

And we can be certain that a house built twenty or thirty years from now will differ greatly from one built today.

그리고 우리는 20년 또는 30년 후에 지어질 집이 오늘날 지어진 집과 매우 다를 것이라는 것을 확신할 수 있다.
