A lot of us feel like doing “something different."

우리 중 많은 이들은 “다른 어떤 것”을 하고 싶어 한다. 

 

 

Studies have shown that people do not like to read instructions, and much of what we do read we either ignore or don’t understand.

연구는 사람들이 설명서를 읽기를 좋아하지 않으며, 우리가 정말로 읽는 것의 많은 부분을 우리는 무시하거나 이해하지 못한다는 것을 보여 주었다.

 

In one test, for example, twenty-four adults were asked to wire a common household electrical plug.

예를 들면, 한 실험에서 24명의 성인들이 흔한 가정용 전기 플러그에 전선을 연결하도록 요청받았다. 

 

 

Only ten of the twenty-four even bothered to look at the instructions.

24명 중 10명만이 설명서를 애써 보는 것까진 했다. 

 

 

And of those ten, seven consulted the instructions only to check the color coding for the electrical wires; the rest of the information was ignored.

그런데 그 10명 중 7명은 그 전선들의 색깔 구분을 확인하기 위해서만 설명서를 참조했고, 나머지 정보는 무시되었다. 

 

Not surprisingly, most people flunked this test.

놀라울 것도 없이, 대부분의 사람들은 이 테스트에서 실패했다. 

 

 

Even when the instructions are unusually important, people tend to pay them little attention.

심지어 설명서가 대단히 중요한 때조차도 사람들은 거의 주의를 기울이지 않는 경향이 있다. 

 

 

As the authors of the electrical plug study noted, “Even in the case of quite unfamiliar tasks, people seem to prefer to act rather than reflect"

전기 플러그 연구의 저자들이 언급했듯이, “꽤 익숙하지 않은 과업의 경우에서조차도, 사람들은 반영하기보다는 행동하기를 선호하는 것으로 보인다.”
