In 1994 the small desert village of Sefidabeh in southeastern Iran was utterly destroyed by an earthquake.

1994년, 이란 남동부의 사막에 위치한 작은 마을 Sefidabeh가 지진에 의해 완전히 파괴되었다. 

 

The curious thing was that Sefidabeh is exceedingly remote: one of the few stops on a long trade route to the Indian Ocean, it’s the only settlement for 100 kilometres in any direction.

이상한 것은 Sefidabeh가 매우 외딴 곳에 있다는 것이었는데, 그 곳은 인도양으로 향하는 긴 무역로에 있는 몇 안 되는 잠시 쉬었다 가는 장소 중의 하나이며, 어느 방향으로 보아도 100킬로미터 이내에 있는 유일한 정착지이다. 

 

 

And yet the earthquake seemed to target the village with unusual precision.

그런데도 지진은 불가사의한 정확성을 가지고 그 마을을 목표로 삼은 듯이 보였다.

 

It turns out that Sefidabeh had been built right on top of a thrust fault lying far underground.

Sefidabeh는 지하 한참 아래에 있는 충상단층 바로 위에 지어졌던 것으로 밝혀져 있다. 

 

The fault was so deep that it had created no obvious signs of its existence on the surface, such as a tell-tale scarp, and so hadn’t been previously identified by geologists.

그 단층은 어찌나 깊은 곳에 있었던지, 숨길 수 없는 급경사와 같은, 자신의 존재를 보여주는 명백한 흔적을 지표면에 남기지 않았고, 그래서 지질학자들에 의해 그 이전에 발견되지 못했던 것이다. 

 

In hindsight, the only sign was an unremarkable, gently-folded ridge running alongside the town, which had slowly been built up over hundreds of thousand years of earthquake movements.

지나고 나서 보니, 유일한 흔적은 수십만년 동안의 지진운동에 의해 서서히 형성된, 마을 옆을 따라 나란히 뻗어 있는 완만한 습곡 형태의 평범한 능선이었다. 

 

The settlement had grown here because this continual tectonic up-thrusting maintained springs at the base of the ridge—the only water source for miles around.

정착지가 이곳에서 발달하게 되었는데 그 이유는 이러한 지속적인 지체 구조적 업–스러스트 단층 작용이 능선 기저에 샘을 유지했고, 이것이 수 마일 주변에 유일한 수원(水源)이기 때문이었다. 

 

The tectonic fault had created the conditions allowing life in the desert, but it also had the potential to kill.

그 지체 구조적 단층은 사막에서 삶을 살아갈 수 있도록 해 주는 환경을 만들었지만, 또한 생명을 죽일 수도 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있었다.
