Increasing urbanization, particularly in the developing world, complicates the issue of secure and inexpensive food supplies.

도시화의 증대는 특히 개발 도상국에서 안정적이고 비싸지 않은 식품 공급이라는 문제를 복잡하게 만든다. 

 

Urbanization increases the demand for surplus food production from the countryside and, consequently, the pressure on rural areas to produce more.

도시화는 시골 지역에서 나오는 여분의 식품 생산에 대한 요구를 증가시키고 결과적으로 더 많이 생산하도록 시골 지역에 가하는 압력을 증가시킨다. 

 

To avoid high food prices and urban unrest, most governments subsidize food prices.

높은 식품 가격과 도시 지역의 불안을 막기 위해 대부분의 정부는 식품 가격에 보조금을 준다. 

 

This has been true throughout history.

이것은 역사를 통틀어 늘 그러했다. 

 

Unfortunately, cheap food leads to the impoverishment of rural populations as well as to environmental degradation.

불행하게도 값싼 식품은 환경의 악화뿐만 아니라 시골 지역 사람들의 빈곤화를 초래한다. 

 

Historically, the initial response to agricultural “development” has been a dramatic reduction in rural populations through migrations to cities, a process that poses huge risks of social unrest in countries like China.

역사적으로 농업 ‘발전’에 대한 초기의 반응은 도시로의 이주를 통한 시골 지역 인구의 급격한 감소였는데, 이는 중국같은 나라에서는 사회적 불안이라는 커다란 위험을 야기하는 과정이다. 

 

While this transition took a century or more in developed countries, it is happening much faster in many developing countries.

이러한 변화가 선진국에서는 한 세기 이상 걸렸던 반면, 많은 개발 도상국에서는 훨씬 빠르게 발생하고 있다. 

 

Recently it has become apparent that market prices for agricultural goods can no longer support rural populations.

최근 농업 생산품의 시장 가격이 더 이상 시골 지역 사람들을 부양할 수 없다는 것이 분명해졌다.

 

 

This problem is accentuated as rural populations see the standard of living of urban populations rising and wish to emulate it.

이런 문제는 시골 지역 사람들이 도시 지역 사람들의 생활 수준이 상승하고 있는 것을 보고 그것을 따라가려고 하면서 두드러지게 된다.
