There are inevitably times when people care more about justice being visited upon the overprivileged and powerful than about becoming better off themselves.

사람이 자신이 더 잘 살게 되는 것보다 특권층과 권력자들에게 정의의 벌이 내려지는 것에 더 많이 신경 쓰는 때가 불가피하게 있다. 

 

Following the 2010 British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP set about compensating local fishermen with out-of-court settlements totaling several billion dollars.

멕시코만(灣)에서 일어난 2010년 British Petroleum (BP)의 기름 유출 후에, BP는 총 수십억 달러에 달하는 합의금으로 현지 어민들에게 배상하기 시작했다. 

 

But for one shrimp producer from Grand Isle, Louisiana, this wasn’t what he wanted.

그러나 Louisiana주 Grand Isle의 어느 새우 생산자에게 이것은 그가 원한 것이 아니었다. 

 

“I want my day in court,” he said. “If they can get off with just paying the money—well, they’ve got plenty of money, they are not really going to learn a lesson. 

“나는 변론할 기회를 원 합니다.”라고 그가 말했다. “저들이 돈을 내는 것만으로 처벌을 면한다면, 글쎄요, 저들은 돈이 많으니까, 그들은 정말로 교훈을 얻지 못할 겁니다.” 

 

”Viewed unkindly, this is a demand for vengeance.

나쁘게 보면, 이것은 복수를 요구하는 것이다. 

 

More sympathetically, it shows that principles of justice and fair punishment are as valid within the economy as anywhere else, and cannot be balanced using money alone.  

더 호의적으로 보면, 그것은 정의와 공정한 처벌의 원칙이 다른 어느 곳과 마찬가지로 경제 내에서 유효하며, 돈만 사용해서는 균형을 이룰 수 없다는 것을 보여 준다. 

 

Either way, this fisherman was expressing something that is incomprehensible from the rationalist perspective of economics.

어느 쪽이든, 이 어민은 경제학의 합리주의적 관점에서는 이해할 수 없는 어떤 것을 표현하고 있었다. 

 

It is a demand that English political philosopher Thomas Hobbes would have understood — that the force of the law should apply to all equally — but which an increasingly technocratic governing class often can’t.

그것은 법의 힘은 모두에게 동등하게 적용되어야 한다는 요구로, 영국의 정치 철학자 Thomas Hobbes는 이해했겠지만, 점점 더 테크노크라시의(많은 권력이 과학 기술 전문가에게 집중되는) 성격을 띠어가는 지배 계층은 흔히 이해할 수 없는 요구이다.
