The contamination pathway in the first known case of an outbreak associated with imported mangoes is particularly paradoxical.

수입 망고와 관련된  처음 알려진 발병 사례의 오염 경로는 특히 역설적이다. 

 

In 1999, 78 people in 13 US states became ill from a common strain of Salmonella enterica; 15 patients were hospitalized and two died.

1999년에 미국의 13 주에서 78명의 사람들이 살모넬라 엔테리카  가지 흔한 균주로 인해 병에 렸는데, 15명의 환자가 입원했고 2 사망했다. 

 

Investigators traced the mangoes back to a farm in Brazil.

조사관들이 브라질  농장까지 되짚어가서  망고의 출처를 밝혀냈다. 

 

They discovered that, surprisingly, no Europeans who had consumed mangoes from the same farm were affected.

그들은 놀랍게도, 로 그 농장의 망고를 먹은 유럽인 중에서는 병에 걸린 사람이  명도 다는 것을 알게 되었다. 

 

Investigators deduced that the mangoes destined for the US had probably absorbed the microbe as a result of a hot water treatment used to fight off fruit flies.

조사관들은 미국행의 망고가 과실파리를 물리치는  사용되는 열탕 처리로 인해 아마도 세균을 흡수했을 것이라고 추론했다. 

 

The treatment was required to meet US standards barring produce carrying the Mediterranean fruit fly — standards the Europeans did not impose.

 처리는 지중해 과실파리를 기는 농산물을 금지하는 미국 기준을 충족하기 위해 요구되었는데, 유럽에서는 부과하지 않는 기준이었다.

 

The farmer had adopted the hot water treatment to avoid employing cancer-causing pesticides to fight off the fruit flies.

 농부는 과실파리를 퇴치하기 위해  유발 살충제를 쓰는 것을 피하려고  열탕 처리를 채택했었다. 

 

But investigators discovered that dipping the mangoes in hot water, then submerging them in cool water before packing initiated a process in which gases inside the fruit contracted, drawing in contaminated water.

그러나 조사관들은 망고를 열탕에 담갔다가 포장전에 그것을 냉수에 담그는 것으 인해 과일 속의 기체가 수축해서 오염된 물을 빨아들였던 과정이 시작 되었다는 것을 알아냈다. 

 

So steps that the farmer had taken to clear the mangoes of insects without using carcinogens had ultimately provided an entree for the pathogen.

그래서  농부가 발암물질을 사용하지 않고 망고에서 곤충을 제거하기 위해 했던 치들이 결국 병원균을 침투하게 했었 것이다.
