As a young man, I went on a recreational fossil hunt in the Badlands of Alberta, a famous dinosaur site in Canada.

젊었을 때, 나는 캐나다의 유명한 공룡 유적지인 Alberta의 Badlands에서 취미 삼아 화석 탐사를 하러 갔다.

 

My friend and I wandered around the barren lands looking for dinosaur bones.

내 친구와 나는 공룡 뼈를 찾아 메마른 땅 주변을 돌아다녔다. 

 

After several unsuccessful hours, near giving up, we met a fellow bone-hunter and inquired about his luck.

몇 시간 동안 성공하지 못하고 거의 포기할 즈음에, 우리는 동료 뼈 탐사자를 만나 그의 행운에 관해 물었다. 

 

He pointed to the ground beneath us, telling us that the stones we were standing on were actually bones of a rather common species of dinosaur, but that his interest lay in only rare samples.

그는 우리 밑의 땅을 가리키며, 우리가 딛고 서 있는 돌멩이들은 사실 꽤 흔한 공룡종의 뼈이지만 그의 관심은 희귀한 표본에만 있다고 우리에게 말했다.

 

Stunned, we looked down at what we thought were merely common rocks, loosely embedded in the weathered soil.

깜짝 놀라서, 우리는 풍화토에 느슨하게 박혀 있는, 흔한 암석이라고만 생각했던 것을 내려다 보았다. 

 

He reached down, grasped one of the loose stones, rolled it around in his fingers as he examined it and said, “This looks like part of a rib from an Edmontosaurus.”

그는 손을 아래로 뻗어, 느슨하게 박혀 있는 돌멩이 하나를 움켜쥐고, 그것을 손가락으로 굴리며 살피면서, “이것은 Edmontosaurus의 갈비뼈의 일부처럼 보이네요.”라고 말했다.

 

Now that a clearer idea of what to look for emerged, our hunting improved measurably.

이제 무엇을 찾아야 할지에 관한 더 명확한 생각이 생겨났기 때문에, 우리의 탐사는 눈에 띄게 향상되었다.
