To reduce the waste of inspection (and checking) in the office, everyone has to play by a new set of rules—in essence, a new paradigm.

사무실에서 점검(과 확인)의 허비를 줄이기 위해서는, 모두가 새로운 일련의 규칙들, 본질적으로 새로운 패러다임에 따라 행동해야 한다. 

 

This begins with an understanding that defects are caused by the way work is performed.

이것은, 결함이 업무가 수행되는 방식에 의해 야기된다는 것을 이해하는데서 시작된다. 

 

If work is performed correctly, inspections are not needed.

업무가 바르게 수행되는 경우에는, 점검이 필요없다. 

 

Generally, the inspection process exists only because of a fear of mistakes made during the work process.

일반적으로 점검 과정은 오로지 업무 과정 중에 일어나는 실수에 대한 두려움 때문에 존재한다.

 

Inspections reveal defects only after they have already occurred.

점검은 결함이 이미 발생한 후에만 그것을 드러낸다. 

 

Stated another way, inspections discover waste.

달리 말하자면, 점검은 허비를 찾아낸다. 

 

The inspection process itself does not add value; in fact, it becomes another form of waste.

점검 과정 그 자체는 가치를 더하지 않는데, 사실 그것은 또 다른 형태의 허비가 된다. 

 

Moreover, this new form of waste is often multilayered.

게다가 이 새로운 형태의 허비는 다층적인 경우가 많다.

 

Think, for example, of the time and effort expended by the people performing the inspections and the number of inspection reports that they generate.

예를 들어 점검하는 사람들이 들이는 시간과 노력, 그리고 그들이 만들어내는 점검 보고서의 수를 생각해 보라. 

 

These reports must be read, responded to or acted upon, and then filed or stored, creating more waste.

이들 보고서는 읽어야 하고, 이에 (적절히) 대응하거나 이에 따라 조치해야 하며, 그런 다음 편철하거나 저장해야 하는데, 이는 더 많은 허비를 만들어 낸다.
