Except in emergencies, an individual usually seeks confirmation of illness first from family or friends.

 

위급한 경우를 제외하고, 보통 개인은 먼저 가족이나 친구로부터 병의 확인을 구한다. 

 

Symptoms are described and a diagnosis is sought.

 

증상을 설명하고 진단을 구한다. 

 

A knowledgeable relative is often the most trusted person in determining whether a condition is cause for concern and whether further care should be pursued; in many cultures, a mother or grandmother is the medical expert within a family.

 

식견이 있는 친척은 상태가 걱정할 거리인지, 그리고 보살핌이 더 계속되어야 하는지를 알아낼 때 흔히 가장 신뢰받는 사람인데, 많은 문화에 서 어머니나 할머니가 가족 내에서 의료 전문가이다. 

 

This is a major step in social legitimization of the sickness.

 

이것은 아픔에 대한 사회적 정당화에 있어 중요한 단계이다. 

 

If others agree that the person is ill, then the individual can adopt a new role within the family or community — sick person.

 

만약 다른 사람들이 그 사람이 아프다는 것에 동의하면, 그러면 그 사람은 가족이나 공동체 내에서 새로운 역할, 즉 병자의 역할을 택할 수 있다. 

 

In this capacity, the sick person is excused from many daily obligations regarding work and family, as well as social and religious duties.

 

이러한 역할에서, 그 병자는 사회적, 종교적 의무뿐 아니라 일 그리고 가족과 관련된 많은 일상의 의무가 면제된다.

 

A reprieve from personal responsibility for well-being is also given, with care provided by relatives, healers, or health professionals.

 

친척이나 치료사 혹은 보건 전문가가 제공하는 보살핌을 받으며 건강에 대한 개인적 책임으로부터 일시적인 경감이 또한 부여된다. 

 

The role of sick person provides a socially accepted, temporary break from the physical and psychological burdens of everyday life, with the understanding that sickness is not a permanent condition and that recovery should occur.

아픈 것은 영구적인 상태가 아니며 회복이 될 것이라는 양해 아래 병자의 역할은 일상 생활의 육체적 및 심리적 부담으로부터 사회적으로 용인된 일시적인 휴식을 제공한다.
