We’re all prone to overestimate our abilities as well as our power to control our destiny.

우리 모두는 운명을 통제하는 우리의 힘뿐만 아니라 우리의 능력을 과대평가하기 쉽다.

 

 

People have a false sense of security on the highway because they consider themselves above-average drivers and expect their skill to protect them, even though many accidents are caused by factors beyond their control.

자신이 통제할 수 없는 요인에 의해 많은 사고가 발생함에도 불구하고, 사람들은 스스로를 평균 이상의 운전자라 생각하고 자신의 기술이 자신을 보호한다고 예상하기 때문에 고속도로에서 잘못된 안전 의식을 갖고 있다. 

 

 

Similarly, when asked how long it will take to complete a project, people typically underestimate the time because they’re too confident in themselves and don’t allow for delays beyond their control.

이와 마찬가지로, 프로젝트를 완성하는데 시간이 얼마나 걸릴 것인지 질문을 받을 때, 사람들은 자신에 대해서 너무 자신감이 넘치고 그들이 통제할 수 없는 지연을 고려하지 않기 때문에 일반적으로 시간을 실제보다 적게 잡는다. 

 

This “optimism bias” causes people to underestimate the risk of some types of negative events in their own lives.

이러한 ‘낙관 편향’은 사람들이 자신의 삶에서 어떤 종류의 부정적인 사건의 위험을 과소평가하게 한다. 

 

 

They’re fully aware that something bad can happen — in fact they often have an unrealistically high expectation that it will happen - but they tell themselves it will happen to someone else.

그들은 나쁜 일이 일어날 수 있다는 것을 완전히 알고 있고, 사실, 그들은 그것이 일어날 것이라고 자주 비현실적으로 높게 예상하고 있지만, 그것이 다른 누군가에게 일어날 것이라고 스스로에게 말한다.
