Elections are an important part of political systems in many countries, both for governments and for many groups within and between countries.

선거는 정부에 있어서나, 나라 안의 또 나라 간의 많은 집단에 있어서나, 많은 나라에서 정치 시스템의 중요한 부분이다. 

 

People vote for the leaders of their national government and their local government, their staff representatives on the boards of large organizations, and the leaders of their professional societies.

사람들은 자신들의 중앙 정부와 지방 정부의 지도자들, 큰 조직체 이사회의 직원 대표들, 전문가 협회의 지도자들에 투표한다. 

 

Voting is believed to deliver representatives who are anchored somewhat to the wishes of their electorate, and as such voting is seen as a vital input in discovering the material interests of the voting population.

투표는 유권자가 바라는 것에 어느 정도 기반을 두고 있는 대표를 배출해 낸다고 믿어지고, 따라서 투표는 투표 집단의 구체적 관심사를 발견하는 데 필수적인 투입으로 여겨진다. 

 

 

Voting is therefore something that governments generally wish to encourage, and policymakers may be asked to recommend interventions that would increase voter turnout.

그러므로 투표는 정부가 일반적으로 장려하고자 하는 것이며, 정책 입안자는 투표율을 증가시킬 권고 안을 추천해 달라는 요청을 받을 수도 있다. 

 

Some countries, such as Australia, fine citizens who do not vote, and others simply set up polling places and entreat people to come.

호주와 같은 일부 나라는 투표를 하지 않는 시민에게 벌금을 부과하고, 또 일부 나라는 단지 투표소를 설치하고 사람들에게 와 달라고 간청하 기만 한다.
