Cultures are tricky.

문화는 까다로운 것이다. 

 

Once people believe in one, they will find it difficult to accept evidence that challenges it.

일단 사람들이 하나의 문화를 믿으면 그것에 이의를 제기하는 증거를 받아들이는 것이 어렵다고 생각하게 될 것이다. 

 

An internal logic is at work, a selective interpretation of evidence, a tendency to interpret experience in line with what people already believe.

내부의 논리가 작동하는데, 그것은 증거의 선택적 해석, 즉 사람들이 이미 믿고 있는 것에 따라 경험을 해석하는 경향이다. 

 

If we are able to step back from what we believe for a moment and see culture for what it really is, we will recognize that what we all believe is in large part the product of our social life; therefore, those who disagree with our basic beliefs are neither fools nor free actors.

우리가 믿고 있는 것에서 잠시 물러나 문화를 그것의 진정한 모습으로 볼 수 있다면, 우리는 우리 모두가 믿고 있는 것이 대부분 우리 사회생활의 산물이라는 것을 인식하게 될 것이고, 그런 까닭에 우리의 기본적인 믿음에 동의하지 않는 사람들은 바보도 아니고 마음대로 행동하는 사람도 아니다. 

 

They are usually a part of a social world that sees reality differently from us.

그들은 대개 우리와 다르게 현실을 보는 사회의 일원이다. 

 

What they believe may or may not be truer than what we believe; but all of us should not be as tempted to be certain that we have the truth.

그들이 믿는 것이 우리가 믿는 것보다 더 사실일 수도 있고 그렇지 않을 수도 있지만, 우리 모두는 우리가 진리를 가지고 있다고 확신하고 싶은 마음이 그들만큼 들어서는 안 된다.
