Reflecting on the extremely rare occasions in which we fundamentally reframe our understanding of the universe causes us to think carefully about the limits on the role of science.

 

우주에 대한 이해를 근본적으로 재구성하는 매우 드문 경우를 곰곰이 생각 해 보면 우리는 과학의 역할의 한계에 대해 신중히 생각하게 된다. 

 

Science is the art of measuring and of developing models to produce predictions.

 

과학은 측정하고 모형을 개발하여 예측을 만들어 내는 기술이다. 

 

Discussions about scientific models often provoke deeper questions about why the universe is in the condition it is in.

 

과학적 모형에 대한 논의는 왜 우주가 현재의 그 상태에 있는지에 관해 더 심도 있는 질문을 흔히 유발한다. 

 

What actually is electrical charge?

 

전하는 실제로 무엇인가?

 

Why is there a gravitational pull between objects?

 

왜 물체 사이에 중력이 존재하는가? 

 

Why do we have the particles we have and not others?

 

왜 우리가 가지고 있는 입자들을 가지고 있고 다른 입자들은 가지고 있지 않은가? 

 

Science presses hard on these questions, closing in as far as it may, but ultimately questions about why things are as they are, as opposed to what they are, lead us into the realms of philosophy and religion.

 

과학은 이러한 질문에 강하게 압박을 가하고 가능한 범위까지 다가가지만, 사물이 ‘무엇’인가가 아니라 사물이 ‘왜’ 그러한 상태인지에 관한 질문은 궁극적으로 철학과 종교의 영역으로 우리를 이끈다.

 

Science can clear away much of the falsehood on the way, but the ultimate questions of reality call more for acts of belief than scientific explanation.

 

과학은 도중에 거짓의 많은 부분을 제거할 수 있지만, 현실에 대한 궁극적인 질문은 과학적 설명보다는 신념의 행동을 더 필요로 한다.

 

It’s a matter of opinion how far scientific models alone provide a full and satisfactory explanation.

과학적 모형만이 완전하고 만족스러운 설명을 어디까지 제공하는가 하는 것은 견해상의 문제이다.
