Many people are uncomfortable about sharing their values.

 

많은 사람들이 자신의 가치관에 대해 말하는 것에 대해 불편해한다.

 

They view the individual as the sole judge of what is right and what is wrong.

 

그들은 개인을 옳은 것과 그른 것에 대한 유일한 판단자로 여긴다. 

 

This thinking leads to a personal and situational view of ethics, namely, “what I do is my own business.”

 

이 사고는 윤리에 대한 개인적이고 상황에 따른 관점, 즉 ‘내가 하는 일은 나 자신의 소관이다’라는 것으로 이어진다. 

 

In this kind of culture, it is difficult to confront people when their values differ from those of the organization.

 

이런 문화에서는, 사람들의 가치관과 조직의 가치관이 다를 때 그들에게 맞서기 어렵다.

Habits of the Heart라는 책에서, Robert Bellah와 그의 동료들은 우리 사회에 만연한 개인주의의 위험성을 논한다. 

 

They suggest that if individualism is America’s greatest strength, it may also be its greatest weakness if taken too far.

 

그들은 개인주의가 미국의 가장 큰 장점일지라도, 도가 지나치면 그것은 또한 미국의 가장 큰 약점이 될 수도 있다고 말한다. 

 

When self-interest asserts itself at the expense of the broader community, then it becomes a problem.

 

더 넓은 공동체를 희생하면서 이기심이 드러나기 시작할 때, 그것은 문제가 된다.
