Cholera, a horrific disease acquired by drinking water contaminated with infected fecal matter, was more than a symbol of an interconnected globe.

 

감염된 대변으로 오염된 물을 마심으로써 얻어지는 끔찍한 질병인 콜레라는 상호 연결된 지구의 상징 이상이었다. 

 

It was a physical presence.

 

그것은 물리적으로 실재하는 것이었다.

 

Its dramatic and sudden arrival in Europe in 1831 threw many into fits of fear; it signaled to some the arrival of a new plague.

 

1831년 그것이 극적이고도 갑작스럽게 유럽에 등장한 것은 많은 사람을 공포의 복받침[발작]으로 몰아넣었는데, 그것은 일부 사람들에게 새로운 전염병이 당도했다는 신호를 보냈다. 

 

Some people fled, just as they had during plague epidemics; others stayed.

 

어떤 사람들은 역병이 급속하게 유행했을 동안 그랬던 것처럼 도망쳤고, 어떤 사람들은 남아 있었다. 

 

Fear of cholera was at times out of proportion to the actual threat.

 

콜레라에 대한 두려움은 때때로 실제적인 위협에 비해 과장되기도 했다. 

 

In 1831, as cholera made its way through Russia, the anxious English awaited its arrival.

 

1831년, 콜레라가 러시아를 통과하게 되자 영국인들은 불안해하면서 콜레라의 도착을 기다렸다.

 

Newspapers, pamphlets, and rumor spread fear of the disease.

 

 

신문, 소책자, 소문이 그 질병에 대한 공포를 확산시켰다.

 

But Dr. James Johnson, editor of the Medico-Chirurgical Review, cautioned the press in a letter to The Times: “It will hardly be doubted that the terrible malady choleraphobia rages at this moment, epidemically, through every spot of the British Isles.... The choleraphobia will frighten to death a far greater number of Britons than the monster itself will ever destroy by his actual presence.”

 

그러나 Medico-Chirurgical Review의 편집자인 James Johnson 박사는 The Times에 보낸 편지에서 언론에 경고했다. “끔찍한 병인 콜레라 공포증이 이 순간 유행병처럼 영국 제도 각지를 관통하여 급속히 번지고 있다는 것은 거의 의심의 여지가 없을 것입니다.... 콜레라 공포증은 그 괴물 자체가 실제로 나타남으로써 앞으로 파괴할 수보다 훨씬 더 많은 수의 영국인들을 죽음의 공포로 몰아 넣을 것입니다.”
