Technology does not exist in isolation.

 

기술은 홀로 존재하지 않는다. 

 

It emerges out of specific economic, social and political contexts.

 

그것은 구체적인 경제적, 사회적, 정치적 환경에서 생겨난다. 

 

But technological change can make certain things possible, or more or less likely.

 

그러나 기술의 변화는 특정한 것들을 가능하게, 혹은 거의 가능성 있게 만들 수 있다. 

 

Technology was no threat to newspapers in the 1980s when computer typesetting and direct input revolutionised the industry, transforming the economics in the direction of huge potential increases in profitability.

 

1980년대에 기술은 신문업체에 전혀 위협이 되지 않았는데, 이때 컴퓨터 조판과 직접적인 입력 방식이 그 산업을 근본적으로 변화시켜 수익성의 엄청난 잠재적인 증가의 방향으로 경제적 측면을 탈바꿈시켰다. 

 

That ‘new technology’ era allowed for enormous growth in the size of newspapers (pagination) with the resultant potential for growing advertising revenues.

 

그 ‘새로운 기술’ 시대는 신문의 크기(면수)의 엄청난 증가와 그에 따른 광고 수익 증가의 잠재력을 가능하게 했다. 

 

The current digital revolution allowing for the delivery of words, pictures and sound through screens and a vast (limitless) increase in the amount of information available through this medium is of course a challenge to newspapers, but not necessarily a terminal threat.

 

스크린을 통한 말, 그림, 소리의 전달과 이 매체를 통한 이용 가능한 정보량의 (제한 없는) 방대한 증가를 가능하게 하는 현재의 디지털 혁명은 물론 신문업체에는 도전이지만, 그렇다고 반드시 치명적인 위협은 아니다. 

 

It is that challenge newspapers are addressing now, in various ways, with varying investment and varying creativity and imagination.

 

신문업체가 다양한 방식으로, 각기 다른 투자와 각기 다른 창의성과 상상력으로 지금 다루고 있는 것은 바로 그 도전이다. 

 

There is undoubtedly a lot of 5gloom to be found in newspaper offices these days, but that is not the whole story.

 

요즈음 신문사 사무실에서는 의심할 여지없이 많은 암울함이 발견될 것이지만 그것이 전부는 아니다. 

 

It is also an exciting time for newspapers.

 

신문업체에는 흥미진진한 시기이기도 하다. 

 

Newspapers are not on death row.

신문업체는 사형 선고를 받고 집행을 기다리고 있는 게 아니다.
