[ 한줄해석 ]

 

 

Ordinary citizens are often keen to blame minority or culturally oppressed groups for their problems or failures.

 

평범한 시민들은 흔히 자신들의 문제나 실패에 대해 소수 집단이나 문화적으로 억압받는 집단을 몹시 비난하고 싶어 한다. 

 

Often this can be explained by ignorance or fear.

 

흔히 이것은 무지나 두려움으로 설명될 수 있다. 

 

If we do not know or understand the culture of a minority or oppressed group, it is easy to see its behaviour as unacceptable or ‘uncivilised’ and therefore not worthy of consideration or respect.

 

우리가 어떤 소수 집단이나 억압받는 집단의 문화를 모르거나 이해하지 못한다면, 그 집단의 행위를 용납할 수 없거나 ‘미개한’ 것으로, 따라서 배려나 존중을 받을 가치가 없는 것으로 보기 쉽다. 

 

Only when we come to understand another culture’s ways can we start to realise that it is, like ours, only human and neither totally wrong nor totally right.

 

다른 문화의 방식을 이해하게 될 때 비로소 우리는 그 문화가 우리 문화처럼 인간적일 뿐이며 완전히 틀린 것도 완전히 옳은것도 아니라는 것을 깨닫기 시작할 수 있다. 

 

It should be a part of a journalist’s role to give readers the information they need to reach sensible decisions, not to play on their fears and prejudices.

 

독자의 두려움과 편견을 이용하는 것이 아니라, 그들에게 합리적인 결정을 내리는 데 필요한 정보를 주는 것이 기자가 하는 역할의 일부가 되어야 한다. 

 

If journalists tell people only what they expect to hear about minority or oppressed groups then the debate about their position in society is not advanced.

 

만약 기자가 소수 집단이나 억압받는 집단에 대해 사람들이 듣기를 기대하는 것만을 그들에게 말해 준다면, 사회에서 그들의 사회적 지위에 관한 논쟁은 진전되지 않는다. 

 

It is part of the journalist’s duty to help advance society’s awareness of such problems by providing people with a wider truth than their existing prejudices.

 

사람들에게 그들의 기존의 편견보다 더 폭 넓은 진실을 제공하여 그런 문제에 대한 사회의 인식을 진전 시키는 데 도움을 주는 것이 기자가 해 야 하는 의무의 일부이다.
