Jellyfish are often found in large swarms or blooms of thousands, even millions of individuals.

해파리는 종종 수천, 심지어 수백만의 개체가 무리를 이루어서, 혹은 (해파리) 대량 출현의 형태로 발견된다. 

 

In recent years, the number of these blooms observed by scientists and fishers has been rising.

최근, 과학자와 어민에 의해 관찰되는 이러한 해파리 대량 출현의 수는 증가하고 있다. 

 

Often they are as long as five to six city blocks, and one megabloom was about 300 meters (1,000 feet) long.

종종 이러한 해파리 대량 출현은 대여섯 도시 구획의 길이에 달하기도 하며, 어떤 거대한 해파리 대량 출현은 약 300미터(1,000피트) 에 이르기도 했다.

 

These blooms have a number of harmful economic effects.

이러한 해파리의 대량 출현은 여러 해로운 경제적 효과를 낳는다. 

 

They cause beach closings, disrupt commercial fishing operations by clogging or tearing holes in nets, wipe out coastal fish farms, and clog ship engines.

이들은 해변 폐쇄를 야기하기도 하고, 그물의 구멍을 막거나 찢음으로써 상업적인 어획 활동을 방해하기도 하며, 근해의 양식장을 완전히 파괴하기도 하며, 어선의 엔진의 작동을 막는다. 

 

They can also close down coal-burning and nuclear power plants by blocking their cooling water intakes.

이들은 또한 냉각수의 취수를 막음으로써 석탄 및 원자력 발전소를 폐쇄시킬 수 있다. 

 

According to Chinese oceanographer Wei Hao and other marine scientists, the startling growth of jellyfish populations threatens to upset marine food webs and ecosystem services and turn some of the world’s most productive ocean areas into jellyfish empires.

중국의 해양학자 Wei Hao와 다른 해양 과학자들에 따르면, 해파리 개체수가 놀랄 만큼 빠르게 증가하는 것은 해양 먹이 사슬과 생태계 서비스를 교란시키거나 세계에서 가장 풍요로운 몇몇 해양 지역을 해파리 제국으로 바꿀 우려가 있다.
