[ 한줄해석 ]

There was a ravine in the forest and Charlie had made his way into it through an early moming fog.

숲에 골짜기가 있었고, Charlie는 이른 아침 안개를 뚫고 그 곳으로 걸어 들어갔다.

 

All the ravine looked the same in the daylight, the high walls, the masses of weeds and wild berry bushes, the trees.

햇빛이 드리워진, 높은 절벽, 우거진 잡초, 산 딸기 덤불 그리고 나무들 속에서 골짜기는 모두 똑같아 보였다. 

 

He had wandered around for a while, following the little paths made by dirt washed down from the hillside, but finally he sat down on a log and stared straight ahead without seeing.

그는 주변을 잠시 헤매다가 산 중턱에서 진흙에 씻겨져 내려 오면서 만들어진 작은 길을 따라 걷다가, 마침내 통나무에 주저앉고 앞을 곧장  응시했으나 아무것도 눈에 들어오지 않았다. 

 

There was a dullness about him now.

지금은 그에게 흐릿함이 있을 뿐이었다. 

 

He had had so many scares, heard so many terrifying noises, got startled by so many shadows, been hurt so often that all his senses were wom to a flat hopelessness.

그는 너무나 많은 무서운 것을 겪었고, 너무나 많은 무서운 소음을 들었고, 너무나 많은 그림자에 놀랐고, 너무 자주 다쳐서 그의 모든 감각은 닳아서 완전한 절망감뿐이었다. 

 

He would just sit here forever.

그는 영원토록 여기에 앉아 있을 것이었다. 

 

It was not the first time Charlie had been lost, but never before had there been this finality.

Charlie가 길을 잃은 것은 처음이 아니었지만 전에는 결코 이러한 결말을 맞아본 적은 없었다.
