A paradox of human culture is that many of the technological and biomedical breakthroughs that revolutionized how and how long we live have been strongly opposed at their inception.

인간 문화의 역설은 우리가 어떻게 살고 얼마나 오래 사는지를 근본적으로  기술  의생명의 획기적 발전  다수가  초기에는 반대가 심했다는 것이다. 

 

This is true not only of those who may not understand the science behind each breakthrough, but of scientists—a fact alluded to by the physicist Max Planck: “a new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”

이것은 각각의 획기적인 발전 이면에 있는 과학을 이해하지 못할지도 모르는 사람들에게 뿐만 아니라, 과학자들에게도 마찬가지인데, 그것은 새로운 과학적 진리는 그것에 반대하는 사람을 설득하고 그들이 마침내 이해하게 해서 승리를거두는 것이 아니, 그보다는 반대하는 사람이 결국에 죽고 그것에 친숙한 새로운 세대가 성장하기 때문에 승리를 거두는 것이.”라고 물리학자 Max Planck 지시 말하는 사실이다. 

 

Most of us are alive today only because we have benefited from the innumerous advances in public health and medicine over the last century, from vaccines and antibiotics to modern surgical techniques and cancer therapies.

우리들 대부분 오로지 백신과 항생제에서부터 대적인 수술 기법과 암 치료법에 이르기까지, 지난 세기동안 공중 보건과 의학에서의   없이 많은 발전으로부터 혜택을 받아왔기 때문에 오늘날 살아있는 것이다. 

 

Yet most transformative biomedical advances have met with significant resistance, from vaccines to organ transplants and in vitro fertilization, and today the same holds true for stem-cell research.

그러나 대부분의 화를 가져오는 의생명의 발전은 백신에서부터 장기 이식과 시험관 수정에 이르기까지 상당한 저항에 부딪쳐 으며, 오늘날 똑같은 것이 줄기세포 구에도  들어맞는다.

 

Technological and biomedical advancements, when introduced initially, have encountered strong opposition not only from lay people but even from scientists, but they have eventually been accepted as the generational shift of a society takes place.

처음에 도입되었을  기술  생명의 발전은 비전문가들뿐만 아니라 심지어 과학자들에게서도 강한 반대에 부딪쳤지만, 그것은 사회의 세대의 화가 생김에 따라 결국 수용되었다.
