Just as people do not stand idly by and let random situations happen to them, so social situations do not let every person enter them.

사람들이 수수방관하다가 무작위의 상황이 자신들에게 일어나도록 내버려 두지 않는 것과 마찬가지로, 사회적 상황 또한 모든 사람이 그것 속으로 들어오도록 내버려 두지는 않는다. 

 

The choice between West Point and Berkeley is only available to students who performed well in high school and on college entrance exams.

West Point(미 육군 사관 학교)와 Berkeley 사이의 선택은 고등학교와 대학 입시에서 좋은 성적을 거둔 학생들에게만 가능하다. 

 

For many situations, a person needs certain characteristics to enter.

많은 상황의 경우에, 사람은 들어가기 위해 특정한 특성이 필요하다. 

 

The high school freshman who is taller than average may be recruited for basketball training, for example, whereas a friend who is better than average at mathematics and sciences may be recruited for honors classes.

예를 들어 평균보다 키가 큰 고등학교 1학년생은 농구 훈련을 위해 뽑힐 수 있지만, 수학과 과학에서 평균보다 우수한 친구는 우등 반에 뽑힐 수 있다. 

 

And small initial differences between people may get even larger as situations (such as basketball training sessions and honors classes) exaggerate them.

그리고 사람들 사이의 초기의 작은 차이는 (농구 훈련 시간과 우등반과 같은) 상황이 그것을 과대하게 만들어서 훨씬 더 커질 수 있다. 

 

At the end of their senior year, the differences between the students are likely to be much greater than they were originally.

졸업반 말에, 학생 간 차이는 원래보다 훨씬 더 클 가능성이 있다. 

 

Thus, situation and person mutually shape and choose one another in a continuing cycle.

따라서 상황과 사람은 계속 순환하며 상호 간에 서로를 형성하고 선택한다.
