Norms make our interactions with others reasonably predictable.

규범은 다른 사람들과의 상호 작용을 상당히 예측 가능하게 해 준다.

 

Americans expect that when they extend a hand to another person, that person will grasp it and a brief handshake will follow.

미국인은 다른 사람에게 한 손을 내밀 때 그 사람이 그 손을 붙잡을 것이고 잠깐 동안의 악수가 뒤따를 것이라고 예상한다. 

 

They would be shocked if they held out their hand and the other person grabbed it and spit on it or wouldn’t let go.

그들이 자신의 손을 내밀었는데 상대방이 그 손을 붙잡고 그 위에 침을 뱉거나 놓아주지 않으면, 그들은 깜짝 놀랄 것이다. 

 

In contrast, people in some societies commonly embrace or kiss each other’s cheek as a form of greeting, even when involved in a formal business relationship.

그에 반해 몇몇 사회의 사람들은 공식적인 업무 관계에 관여할 때조차도 인사의 한 형태로 보통 포옹을 하거나 서로의 볼에 키스를 한다. 

 

A hearty handshake in those societies may be interpreted as an insult.

그런 사회에서는 다정한 악수가 모욕으로 이해될 수도 있다. 

 

In Thailand, people greet each other by placing the palms of their hands together in front of their bodies and slightly bowing their heads.

태국에서는 사람들이 자신들의 몸 앞에 두 손을 모아 합장하고 머리를 약간 숙임으로써 서로에게 인사한다. 

 

This greeting is governed by strict norms.

이러한 인사는 엄격한 규범에 의해 지배된다.

 

Slight differences in the placement of one’s hands reflect the social position of the other person — the higher the hands, the higher the position of the person being greeted.

두 손을 놓는 위치에서 약간의 차이는 상대방의 사회적 지위를 나타내는데, 두 손을 높이 하면 할수록 인사를 받고 있는 사람의 지위가 더 높다. 

 

Norms like these make it easier to “live with others” in a relatively harmonious way.

이와 같은 규범은 비교적 조화로운 방식으로 ‘다른 사람들과 살아가는’ 것을 더 쉽게 만든다.
