Before the Industrial Revolution, formal education used to be a luxury reserved for specific classes of people.

산업 혁명 전에 정규[학교] 교육은 특정한 계급의 사람들을 위해 마련된 사치품이었다. 

 

Families with high social standing would send their children to school, while children from families of lower status would learn what they needed at home or, more rarely, from tutors.

높은 사회적 지위가 있는 가정은 그들의 자녀를 학교에 보냈지만, 반면 낮은 지위의 가정 출신 아이들은 필요한 것을 집에서,혹은 더 드물게는, 가정교사로부터 배우곤 했다. 

 

In these cases, the children would be taught those things that the family needed.
이런 경우에 아이들은 그 가정이 필요로 하는 그러한 것들을 배울 것이었다.

 

 

There was little need for the average person to learn anything but what it took to run their own homes.

보통의 사람이 자기 자신의 가정을 꾸리는 데 필요한 것 외에는 무엇이든 배울 필요가 거의 없었다. 

 

 Whatever was needed could be produced at home, or traded for with other families.

필요한 것이 무엇이든 그것은 집에서 생산되거나, 다른 가정과 교환될 수 있었다. 

 

In a post-industrial society, however, the average family can no longer be self-sufficient.

그러나 산업화 이후의 사회에서는 일반 가정이 더 이상 자급자족할 수 없다. 

 

This produces an environment where, for those who are a part of that society, the world can no longer be successfully navigated with nothing but primary abilities in one’s arsenal.

이것은 그런 사회의 일부인 사람들에게는 단지 자신의 보고에 있는 기본 능력만으로는 더 이상 성공적으로 세상을 항해할 수 없는 환경을 창 출한다. 

 

Rather, this industrialized world requires secondary knowledge, which is typically acquired in a formal educational setting, like a school.

반대로, 이러한 산업화 세계는 이차적 지식을 요구하는데, 그것은 학교와 같은 정규교육 환경에서 일반적으로 습득된다.
