★ 중요어법 

 

 ~ to make / a significant portion of Mediterranean flora and fauna / dependent on human assistance in reproduction and survival.

 

굉장히 긴 형태의 5형식 구문입니다.

목적어로 명사가 오고 목적격 보어 자리에 dependent 형용사가 쓰였습니다.

목적격 보어 자리는 부사처럼 해석될 지라도

문장 형식에 영향을 주지 않는 부사가 아닌

문장형식에 영향을 주는 형용사를 써야함에 주의합니다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

[ 한줄해석 ]

 

 

Of cultivated crops, cereals were of the greatest economic importance in the Mediterranean region in ancient times, just as rice was the basic type of food in East Asia, and Indian corn and quinoa in the Americas.

 

경작되는 작물 중에서, 곡물은 고대 지중해 지역에서 경제적으로 가장 중요했는데, 이것은 동아시아에서 쌀이, 그리고 아메리카 대륙에서 옥수수와 퀴노아가 기본적인 종류의 식품이었던 것과 똑같다. 

 

Since wild plants were necessarily self-seeding for their survival, the early Neolithic farmers favored individual plants that had developed suicidal mutations that prevented the pod from opening naturally and scattering the seed.

 

야생 식물은 자신의 생존을 위해 필연적으로 자연파종으로 번식하였기 때문에 초기 신석기 농부들은 꼬투리가 자연적으로 열려 씨앗을 퍼뜨리는 것을 막는 자멸적인 돌연변이를 발생시킨 독특한 식물을 선호했다. 

 

Thus they were able to harvest their crops without losing grains, and could later separate the seeds from the pods.

 

그리하여 그들은 낟알을 잃지 않고 자신의 농작물을 수확할 수 있었고, 나중에 꼬투리에서 씨앗을 분리할 수 있었다. 

 

Similarly with animals: those that exhibited juvenile characteristics were favored over the strong, and bred to eliminate their wild characteristics.

 

동물의 경우에도 비슷했는데, 강한 것들보다는 어린 특성을 보이는 것들이 선호되었고 야생의 특성을 없애도록 사육되었다.
