Although globalization processes are often blamed for language loss, in some cases communities and language activists, including linguistic anthropologists, are using web-based technology to save endangered languages.

 

비록 세계화 과정이 흔히 언어가 소실되는 것과 관련해서 비난받지만, 몇몇 경우에 있어 지역 사회와 언어 인류학자들을 포함한 언어 활동가들은 소멸 위기에 처한 언어를 구하기 위해 웹 기반의 기술을 이용하고 있다. 

 

Bud Lane III is one of the last surviving speakers of Siletz-Dee-ni, an indigenous language in a small community in Oregon.

 

Bud Lane 3세는 Oregon에 있는 한 작은 지역사회의 토착 언어인 Siletz-Dee-ni어를 사용하는 마지막 생존자 중 한 명이다. 

 

Siletz-Dee-ni began to decline in the mid-1850s when several cultural groups, speaking different languages and dialects, were placed on the same reservation.

 

Siletz-Dee-ni어는 다른 언어와 방언들을 말하는 몇 개의 문화 집단들이 같은 보호구역에 배치되었던 1850년대 중반에 쇠퇴하기 시작했다. 

 

To communicate they began speaking a Chinook jargon that replaced Siletz-Dee-ni.

 

의사 소통을 하기 위해 그들은 Siletz-Dee-ni어를 대체한 Chinook 사투리를 말하기 시작했다. 

 

Fortunately, this language has been immortalized on a “talking dictionary” using Lane’s own voice.

 

다행히도 이 언어(Siletz-Dee-ni)는 Lane 자신의 목소리를 사용하여 ‘말하는 사전’에 영구 보존되었다. 

 

This talking dictionary now contains 14,000 words and, with the language on the Internet, young people in the community are beginning to learn the language once again —they even text in Siletz-Dee-ni.

 

이 말하는 사전은 현재 14,000개의 단어를 포함하고 있으며, 그 언어가 인터넷상에 올라 있어, 그 지역 사회의 젊은이들이 다시 한번 그 언어를 배우기 시작하고 있으며, 그들은 심지어 Siletz-Dee-ni어로 문자 메시지를 보내기도 한다. 

 

Other communities with endangered languages are also embracing social media — YouTube, text messaging, and websites — as a vehicle for saving their languages.
