In a study at Stanford University, four-year-olds at a nursery school were offered a marshmallow.

Stanford 대학의  연구에서, 어린이집의 4살배기 유아들 마시멜로를 제공받았다. 

 

They were told they could either eat the marshmallow immediately or wait.

그들은  마시멜로를 즉시 먹어도 되고 또는 기다리고 있어도 된다는 말을 들었다.

 

If they waited to eat the marshmallow that sat before their eyes until the experimenter returned (about 15 minutes), they would receive two marshmallows.

만약 실험자가 다시 돌아올 ( 15 )까지 그들이 눈앞에 놓인 마시멜로를 먹기 위해 기다린다면, 그들은 2개의 마시멜로를 받게 된다. 

 

Walter Mischel, a psychologist studying delaying gratification, had three daughters who attended the nursery school; they and their classmates participated in the study.

만족 지연에 관한 연구를 하고 있는 심리학자인 Walter Mischel  딸들이  린이집에 다니고 있었는데 그들과 그들의 친구들이  연구에 참여 했다. 

 

Over the years, he would ask his daughters about their friends, and in doing so he detected a relationship between an ability to delay gratification, in preschool and excelling in adolescence.

여러  동안, 그는 딸들에게 친구들에 대해 묻곤 했고, 그렇게 함으로써 유아기에 만족을 지연시키는 능력과 청소년기의 우수성 사이의 관계를 발견했다. 

 

Mischel and his colleagues located the participants in the initial study to more formally track their progress as they matured.

Mischel 그의 동료들은 성장하는 동안 그들의 발달을 보다 공식적으로 추적하기 위해 초기 연구에 참가했 참가자들을 찾아냈다. 

 

 

They noticed that the children who ate the single marshmallow right away were likely to have problems in the areas of behavior, friendships, and attention.

그들은 마시멜로 하나를 즉시 먹었던 어린이들은 행동, 교우관계, 그리고 주의집중 영역에 문제가 있을 가능성  있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 

 

In contrast, those who were able to delay gratification had higher SAT scores and coped better with stress.

대조적으로 만족을 지연시킬  있었 어린이들은 SAT에서  높은 점수를 받았고, 스트레스에   대처했다.

 

According to Mischel’s study, children who could put off their desire showed superior achievements in adolescence, while those who sought instant satisfaction tended to have various troubles.

Mischel 연구에 따르면, 자신들의 욕구를 미룰  있었던 린이들은 청소년기에 월등한 성취를 보여 주었던 반면, 즉각적인 족을 추구했던 어린이들은 여러 가지 어려움을 겪는 경향이 있었다.
