In 2002, UC Santa Barbara neuroscientist Michael Miller conducted a study of verbal memory.

2002년 UC Santa Barbara의 신경 과학자 Michael Miller는 언어적 기억에 관한 연구를 수행했다. 

 

One by one, sixteen participants lay down in an fMRI brain scanner and were shown a set of words.

16명의 참가자들이 한 명씩 기능적 자기공명영상(fMRI) 두뇌 스캐너에 누웠고, 그들에게 한 세트의 단어가 제시되었다.  

 

After a few minutes' rest, a second series of words was presented and they pressed a button whenever they recognized a word from the first series.

몇 분간의 휴식 이후에 두 번째 일련의 단어들이 제시되었고, 그들이 첫 번째 세트로부터의 단어를 인식할 때마다 버튼을 눌렀다. 

 

As each participant decided whether he had seen a particular word a few minutes ago, the machine scanned his brain and created a digital “map" of his brain’s activity.

각 참가자가 특정 단어를 몇 분 전에 봤는지를 결정할 때, 그 기계는 그의 두뇌를 스캔하고 그의 두뇌 활동의 디지털 ‘지도’를 만들었다. 

 

When Miller finished his experiment, he reported his findings the same way every neuroscientist does: by averaging together all the individual brain maps from his subjects to create a map of the Average Brain.

Miller가 실험을 끝냈을 때, 그는 그의 실험 결과를 모든 신경 과학자들이 보고하는 방식 그대로 ― 평균 두뇌의 지도를 만들기 위해 피실험자들로부터 나온 모든 개인적인 두뇌 지도를 합쳐 평균치를 만들어― 보고 했다. 

 

Miller’s expectation was that this average map would reveal the neural circuits involved in verbal memory in the typical human brain.

Miller는 이 평균 지도가 전형적인 인간 두뇌의 언어적 기억과 관련된 신경 회로를 드러낼 것으로 예상했던 것이다.
