In an experiment in Germany, part of a fleet of taxicabs in Munich was equipped with antilock brake systems (ABS), a technological innovation that vastly improves braking.

독일에서의 한 실험에서, 뮌헨의 전체 택시의 일부에 제동 장치를 크게 향상시킨 기술의 혁신품인 앤티록 제동 장치(ABS)를 갖추게 했다. 

 

The rest of the fleet was left unequipped, and the two groups were placed under careful and secret observation for three years.

나머지 차량에는 설치되지 않았고, 두 그룹이 3년 동안 주의 깊고 비밀스러운 관찰을 받게 되었다. 

 

 

You would expect the better brakes to make for safer driving.

더 향상된 브레이크가 더 안전한 운전에 도움이 될 것이라고 예상할 것이다. 

 

 

However, that is exactly the opposite of what happened.

하지만, 그것은 발생한 일과는 정반대였다. 

 

 

Giving some drivers ABS made no difference at all in their accident rate; in fact, it turned them into markedly inferior drivers.

일부 운전자에게 ABS를 부여한 것은 그들의 사고율에 전혀 차이를 만들지 못했고, 사실, 그것은 그들을 눈에 띄게 열등한 운전자로 만들었다. 

 

They drove faster.

그들은 더 빨리 몰았다. 

 

They made sharper turns.

그들은 더 급회전을 했다. 

 

 

They braked harder.

In other words, the ABS systems were not used to reduce accidents; instead, the drivers used the additional element of safety to enable them to drive faster and more recklessly without increasing their risk of getting into an accident.

다시 말해서, ABS 시스템은 사고를 줄이는 데 사용되지 않았고, 그 대신에 운전자들은 이 추가적인 안전요소를 사고에 처할 위험을 증가시 키지 않으면서 그들이 더 빨리 그리고 더 무분별하게 운전할 수 있도록 하기 위해 이용했다.
