The game of baseball can provide a snapshot of why it’s important to focus resources in the right areas to be successful.

야구라는 경기는 성공하기 위해 자원을 적절한 영역에 집중시키는 것이 왜 중요한지에 대한 짤막한 정보를 제공할 수 있다. 

 

During the 2001–2010 Major League Baseball seasons, the New York Yankees have won one World Series title.

2001~2010 메이저 리그 야구 시즌 동안, 뉴욕 양키스는 월드시리즈 선수권에서 한 번 우승했다. 

 

Winning even one title would seem impressive for most ball clubs.

선수권에서 한 번 우승하는 것도 대부분 야구단에 인상적으로 보일 것이다. 

 

However, when you consider that the New York Yankees continually have the highest payroll of any team, sometimes even two or three times the payroll, that single-win record exposes an ineffective use of resources.

하지만 여러분이 뉴욕 양키스가 계속해서 어느 팀보다도 가장 높은 급여 지급 총액을, 때때로 심지어 그 두 배 혹은 세 배 더 많은 급여 지급 총액을 지급하고 있다는 것을 고려할 때, 그 한 번 우승의 기록은 효과적이지 못한 자원의 사용을 드러낸다. 

 

 

This shows that having the most resources guarantees nothing.

이것은 자원이 가장 많이 있다는 것이 아무것도 보장하지 않는다는 것을 보여 준다. 

 

It’s how we use, or allocate, those resources that truly matters.

정말 중요한 것은 바로 우리가 이런 자원을 사용하거나 할당하는 방법이다. 

 

Smith College economics professor Andrew Zimbalist offers this analysis:

Between 70 and 85 percent of a team’s on-field success is explained by factors other than payroll.”
