Our errors about what others are thinking are a major cause of human drama.

다른 사람들이 무엇을 생각하고 있는가에 관한 우리의 착오가 인간 드라마의 주요 원인이다. 

 

As we move through life, wrongly predicting what people are thinking and how they’ll react when we try to control them, we haplessly trigger feuds and fights and misunderstandings that fire devastating spirals of unexpected change into our social worlds.

우리는 살아가면서, 사람들이 무엇을 생각하고 있는가와 우리가 그들을 통제하려 할 때 그들이 어떻게 반응할 지를 잘못 예측하여, 우리는 불운하게도 예상치 않은 변화의 파괴적인 소용돌이에 불을 붙여 우리의 사교 영역으로 들어가게 하는 불화와 싸움과 오해를 일으킨다. 

 

Comedy, whether by William Shakespeare or John Cleese and Connie Booth, is often built on such mistakes.

William Shakespeare에 의한 것이든 John Cleese와 Connie Booth에 의한 것이든 간에, 희극은 흔히 그런 실수들에 근거하여 구성된다. 

 

But whatever the mode of storytelling, well-imagined characters always have theories about the minds of other characters and — because this is drama — those theories will often be wrong.

그러나 이야기하는 형식이 무엇이든, 잘 그려진 등장인물은 항상 다른 등장인물의 마음에 관한 이론을 가지고 있는데, 이것은 드라마이기 때문에, 그런 이론들은 흔히 틀릴 것이다. 

 

This wrongness will lead to unexpected consequences and yet more drama.

이렇게 틀린 것이 예상치 않은 결과와 훨씬 더 많은 드라마를 만들어 낼 것이다. 

 

The influential post-war director Alexander Mackendrick writes, ‘I start by asking: What does A think B is thinking about A?

영향력 있는 전후(戰後)의 감독 Alexander Mackendrick은 ‘나는 질문하면서 시작한다. B가 A에 대해 무슨 생각을 하고 있다고 A는 생각 하는가? 

 

It sounds complicated (and it is) but this is the very essence of giving some density to a character and, in turn, a scene.’

그것이 복잡하게 들리지만(그리고 실제로 그렇지만), 이것이 어떤 등장인물 그리고 결과적으로 어떤 장면에 어느 정도의 비중을 부여하는 것 의 바로 본질이다.’ 라고 쓰고 있다.
