A family from Israel who moved to Northern California was amazed by the isolation they experienced when they moved into their San Francisco neighborhood.

 

북부 캘리포니아로 이주한 한 이스라엘 출신 가족은 샌프란시스코 한 지역으로 이사하면서 겪은 고립감에 놀라움을 금치 못했다.

 

They had lived in a kibbutz, where they experienced a strong sense of community in every sense of the word.

 

그들은 키부츠에서 살았었는데, 그곳에서 그들은 어느모로 보나 강한 공동체 의식을 경험했다.

 

“When we moved here,” said the father, “it was culture shock!

 

 “우리가 이곳으로 이사 왔을 때, 그것은 문화 충격이었어요!

 

People nodded and smiled with a brief hello coming and going, and then disappeared into their own dwelling, and we wouldn’t see them again for days at a time.

 

사람들은 오가며 고개를 끄덕이고 짧은 인사와 함께 미소를 짓고는, 자신들의 집 안으로 사라져 버렸고, 우리는 한 번 그러면 며칠씩 다시는 그들을 보지 못하곤 했어요.

 

One night, my wife suggested that if the mountain wasn’t going to come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain.

 

어느 날 밤, 아내는 산이 Muhammad에게 오지 않을 거면, Muhammad가 산에 가야 한다고 제안했지요.

 

It was at that point that we realized we had a gift to bring to our neighbors — the gift of community!”

 

바로 그 순간에, 우리는 우리의 이웃에게 가져다 줄 선물, 즉 공동체라는 선물이 있다는 것을 깨달았어요!”

 

Over the next few months, the family organized a block party, a neighborhood yard sale, and an open house brunch.

 

그 후 몇 달 동안, 그 가족은 가구 주민 파티, 동네 마당 세일, 오픈하우스 브런치를 준비했다.

 

Each was a big success.

 

모두 각각 대성공이었다.

 

People became friends, and the connections snowballed.

 

사람들은 친구가 되었고, 관계는 눈덩이처럼 불어났다. 

 

A small baby-sitting co-op began in the neighborhood, as well as a family neighborhood cleanup event that took place at the beginning of each season on a Saturday morning.

 

계절의 초입마다 어느 토요일 아침에 가족 동네 청소 행사가 거행되었을 뿐만 아니라, 동네에 작은 탁아 협동조합이 시작됐다.
