[한줄해석]

 

Caley turned away from the Christmas tree and saw her mother fussing at the kitchen sink.

 

Caley는 크리스마스트리에서 시선을 돌려 엄마가 부엌싱크대에서 법석을 떨고 있는 것을 보았다.

 

She was a few inches shorter than Caley, and still healthy at fifty-three.

 

엄마는 Caley 보다 키가 몇 인치 더 작았는데 53세 의 연세에도 여전히 건강했다.

 

She looked to be in her early forties with fine wisdom lines showing only when she smiled.

 

그녀는 40대 초반으로 보였는데 미소 지을 때만 가느다란 연륜의 주름이 드러났다.

 

Today she was smiling.

오늘 그녀는 미소짓고 있었다.

 

She loved nothing better than to have all of her children in the house sharing fun and food.

 

자신의 모든 자녀들이 집에서 즐거움과 음식을 나누는 것보다 그녀가 더 좋아하는 것은 없었다. 

 

The table was lined with shrimp and cocktail sauce, hot wings with dips, Swedish meatballs, ham and turkey, not to mention the variety of vegetables and dinner rolls.

 

식탁에는 각종 채소와 디너롤(동그란 모양의 식전빵)은 물론이고, 새우와 칵테일 소스, 소스를 곁들인 매운 닭날개, 스웨덴식 미트볼, 햄과 칠면조 고기가 줄지어 놓여 있었다.

 

There was far too much food for thirteen people, but the leftovers were always divided up and the tradition continued.

 

13명에게는 지나치게 많은 음식이 놓여 있었지만 남은 음식은 늘 나눠 가졌고 그 전통은 계속되었다.

 

Mom called the family into the living room. “It’s that time!”

 

엄마는 가족들을 거실로 불러들였다. “시간이 됐다!”

 

She smiled as she handed out stockings to everyone. This too was a tradition.

 

엄마가 모두에게 크리스마스 스타킹을 나누어주며 미소 지었다. 이것도 역시 전통이었다.

 

The stockings held small things for each individual as well as candies and fun stuff.

 

크리스마스 스타킹에는 사탕과 재미난 것들뿐만 아니라 각 개인을 위한 작은 것들도 들어 있었다.
