Metaphorically speaking, human memory is like a public library that organizes its books according to their predicted popularity.

비유적으로 말하여, 인간의 기억은 예측되는 인기도에 따라 책을 정리하는 공공도서관과 유사하다. 

 

Frequently checked out books, that is, popular books (e.g., the Dan Brown blockbusters), will be made available in special spaces near the entrance of the library to make it easy for members to find them.

빈번하게 대출되는 책들, 즉 인기 있는 책들(예를 들어 Dan Brown의 크게 성공한 소설)은 도서관 회원들이 쉽게 찾을수 있도록 도서관의 입구 근처의 특별한 공간에서 이용할 수 있을 것이다.

 

In contrast, less popular books (e.g., the books by Herta Müller, recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature), the ones rarely checked out in the past, will be placed in the back of the library.

반대로 덜 인기 있는 책들(예를 들어 2009년 노벨 문학상 수상자인 Herta Müller의 책들), 즉 과거에 거의 대출되지 않았던 책들은 도서관 뒤편에 놓여 있을 것이다. 

 

Because of the environment being thus reflected in our memory, we can use our memory to make inferences about the environment.

이와 같이 우리의 기억 속에 반영되고 있는 환경 때문에, 우리는 자신의 기억을 활용하여 환경에 관해 추론할 수 있다. 

 

We can infer, for example, that the more fluently we retrieve an item from memory, the more often we must have encountered it in the past.

예를 들어, 우리가 기억에서 어떤 항목을 더 쉽게 생각해 낼수록, 우리는 과거에 그것을 더욱 빈번하게 접했었음이 틀림없다고 추론할 수 있다.
